FERGUS – Art students at Centre Wellington District High School had the rare opportunity to show – and perhaps sell – some of their work at a real art gallery.
Local Pieces, in downtown Fergus, celebrated an opening reception of the students’ work on June 12.
Art teachers Bobbi Bentham Reynolds and Jennifer Main said these opportunities dried up with the pandemic, so it was special to have an event live and in person.
Grade 11 student Anna Main’s piece is an abstract city scape that suggests buildings, lights and busy streets. It was done in 20 minutes, she said – part of an in-class art challenge to produce quickly and not overthink the process.
Sophia Deluca examines a sponge in her piece that features bright oranges, yellows and reds.
“I learned to enjoy oil pastel,” she said. “It gives the look of oil without the paint.”
Grade 9 student Desmond Neerhof said his high school art class was the first “legit” art class he’s taken.
His piece was of feed bottles done in charcoal.
Students set their own prices, which was part of the learning experience the teachers said.
The exhibit is on until June 25.
Local Pieces is located at 126 St. Andrew St. W. in Fergus. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm; Sunday 11am to 4pm.
