PALMERSTON – Two new streets named for local veterans will be dedicated in Palmerston this weekend.
The Town of Minto will be holding a veteran’s roadway dedication ceremony in honour of the Bridge and Stephenson families on Oct. 29.
Family members of the veterans will be present for the dedication, as will representatives of the Palmerston Legion, Minto council, Perth-Wellington MP John Nater and MPP Matthew Rae.
Since 2015, all new streets developed within the Town of Minto have been named to honour the memory of men and women from the community who have served in war, military action or peacekeeping assignments as part of Canada’s military.
“The inclusion of a poppy on the street signs is used to signify the importance of those names,” town officials state in a press release.
Two families, eight veterans
The Bridge family included five members who served in the military – William Oldfield Bridge in the First World War and four, Bob, Clayton, Norman and Milton Bridge, in the Second World War.
The Stephenson Family included three individuals, Elroy, Lyle and Lloyd Stephenson, who served in the Second World War.
All eight veterans were born and raised in the Palmerston area and three went on to serve as president of the Palmerston Legion Branch 409.
“Bridge Crescent and Stephenson Way are to be named on behalf of these men, who stepped up and represented their home with the utmost bravery and honour,” the release states.
The sign unveiling will take place Saturday at 11am in the Creek Bank Meadows subdivision in Palmerston.
A reception will take place immediately afterwards at the Palmerston Legion.
