Spring Warrior Challenge raises over $40,000

The inaugural spring Wellington Warrior Challenge saw more than 200 participants raise a total of $43,535 for the Wellington County unit of the Canadian Cancer Society here on June 1.

Lorraine Skarratt of the local cancer society unit said about 40 teams participated in the event, held at Mapleton Organic near Rothsay on Wellington Road 7.

Skarratt said the society was pleased with the response to the event, noting the weather even cooperated by providing some rain.

“The rain was actually good for us, it provided lots of mud on the course,” she said, adding, “There were a lot of dirty people at the end of the day.”

The event was the second Wellington Warrior Challenge hosted by the local branch of the society. The first, held last October at the Cox Creek Winery property near Fergus, raised $52,000.

“It was good to connect with the northern part of the county,” said Skarratt of the Mapleton event, noting the success of both runs means the society will continue to hold events both spring and fall.

“We will definitely be back to this area in 2014,” said Skarratt, adding next year’s spring run will be held in the same location.

The 2013 fall challenge will be held at Cox Creek on Sept. 21.
