WELLINGTON COUNTY – Farms in and around the north part of the county will open their gates to visitors May 25 for the Taste Real Spring Rural Romp.
The self-guided tour is a chance to check out farms, markets, nurseries and local food and drink businesses in Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North. It will include opportunities to purchase farm-fresh foods, plants and seedlings, farm tours, kids’ activities, the chance to see some farm animals and more.
The event runs from 10am to 4pm, and includes 13 locations. Printed maps can be picked up at any of the locations on the tour, which are listed online at wellington.ca/en/business/tr-springruralromp.aspx. A printable map can also be downloaded from the website.
This season’s tour features a treasure hunt contest, with participants invited to look for a QR code at each participating location and answer a trivia question for a chance to win “local food treasure,” the website says.
“There’s a different question at every location, so the more Rural Romp destinations you visit, the more chances you have to win,” it says.
The website also provides some tips for how to get the best out of the tour:
– bring a cooler to keep the food you buy fresh;
– bring cash, because many locations don’t take debit or credit;
– leave pets at home. Many farms don’t allow them on the property;
– dress appropriately. There are places where you will have the chance to get dirty;
– bring an umbrella. The event is rain or shine; and
– bring a camera to take photos, and share on social media with #RuralRomp and #tastereal.
