Spirit of the Hills brings Maritimes to Hillsburgh

It’s “Anchors Away” as Hillsburgh celebrates Canada’s maritime provinces at Spirit of the Hills 2013, Hillsburgh’s Family Fun Day on Aug. 17.

From 10am to 2pm, Trafalgar Road will be closed for this community event organized by the Let’s Get Hillsburgh Growing Committee and the Hillsburgh Lions Club.

There will be a bouncy castle, a beachcomber’s tub, pin the sail on the Bluenose, feed the whale, and boat races for the kids.

In the Hillsburgh library, there will be children’s nautical crafts and other seafaring activities. Those attending will be able to enter the “Guess How Many Salt Water Taffies Are in the Jar” contest.

Participants can vote on their favourite car at the classic car show. Sail down the main street to discover a crew of vendors bartering their wares.

At the Guelph Storm’s Top Shot Hockey Challenge tent, young and old will be able to fire their hardest shots at the net and see how fast and hard the shots are.

Learn how to tie a fly at the Izaak Walton Flyfishing Club booth.

Nearby, Pockets the Clown will perform magic tricks and create balloon creations for the children throughout the day.

Bagpiper Liam MacDonald will officially open the event at 10am. Headlining the day’s entertainment at 11 am  is “StomPierre, a one man Stompin’ Tom Connors tribute”.

Last but not least will be local favourite Kent Tocher at 1pm.

Don’t miss local politicians participating in the Celebrity Challenge at 1pm. This year, the challenge will test their nautical knowledge, ship-building skills and sailing techniques.

Each participant will build a boat and race it against the other contestants.

These are just a few of the activities planned for this fun-filled day.

Go awn wich ya!   And have no fears. If it’s weatherin’ outside, the event will move inside to the Hillsburgh Community Centre.
