WELLINGTON COUNTY – Every municipality in the county is getting a speed camera early next year, and this month signs are being posted to let people know where they will be located.
“The goal is to educate and provide sufficient warning to all drivers that ASE cameras are in use, while providing ample warning through onsite signage, public education, and a phased-in camera activation approach,” county warden Andy Lennox stated in a news release.
The county is implementing the automated speed enforcement (ASE) through a one-year pilot program in designated school and community safety zones.
The ASE cameras will be used along with other traffic control measures that focus on education and enforcement, the release stated.
“ASE has been proven to slow down traffic, and managing speed improves traffic safety for the community,” Lennox stated.
“Camera coming soon” signs need to be installed at least 90 days before the cameras are activated, and are “currently being installed at seven locations on county roads,” the Oct. 11 release stated.
When the cameras are activated in 2025, “camera in use” signs will warn drivers.
The following are the seven initial pilot locations, selected based on current traffic data:
– Wellington North – Sligo Road East, Mount Forest, by Wellington Heights school;
– Mapleton – Wellington Street South, Drayton, by Drayton Heights school;
– Centre Wellington – Belsyde Avenue East, Fergus, by J.D. Hogarth school;
– Erin – Trafalgar Road, Hillsburgh, by Ross R. MacKay school;
– Puslinch – Brock Road South, near the Puslinch Community Centre;
– Minto – Main Street, Palmerston, between Henry and York streets; and
– Guelph/Eramosa – Main Street, Rockwood, by Sacred Heart school and the fire station.
When the cameras being operating, if a vehicle is detected travelling more than the posted speed limit in one of these locations, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a ticket in the mail.
