Society hosts rainy day garden tour

Clifford and District Horticultural Society special events duo Jean Yenssen and Carol Lange organized a summer garden tour on July 24, on what turned out to be a rainy day with umbrellas needed at every stop.

At Telfer Wegg’s home in Neustadt the participants met his groundskeeper, Shirley, who cares for a bountiful number of gigantic hostas, lush grasses, and explosions of colour all through the garden.

Two blocks over, the group stopped to explore day lilies, hostas, and a mini display hidden in the middle of Carl Preuss’ garden.

Next stop was lunch at Gramma Jo’s.

Heading to Howick, the group walked along the wraparound garden at Frances Renwick’s to see a variety of plants and a number of well-placed ornamental features. As the skies poured, the participants headed to the Purple Rooster to see the gardens of Ron and Linda Henhoeffer.

They have a number of feature gardens with one specially designed with plants, rocks and a handcrafted deer representing the whole country for Canada’s 150th birthday. Across the road, they saw the work of the Howick Bloomers with the floral display and butterfly garden at the Howick arena.

Ron and Linda’s “The Purple Rooster” at 45095 Harriston Road, Gorrie is listed in Discover the Gardens of Huron Perth as number 11.

They have an added attraction this year.

On Aug. 26 they will host a fundraiser for cancer research.

Everyone is invited to tour the gardens for free and enjoy a sausage on a bun and drink for $5.

Call 519-335-6235 for further information on the fundraiser.
