“Smokey and the Bandit” were spotted in Harriston on July 28.
As streams of weekend traffic passed along the main street, passersby noticed a sheriff’s car and five highly polished Firebird Trans Ams parked in front of the Crown Theatre. A fully restored original movie poster in the window of the theatre cafe, some cowboy hats and wedding dresses, but no Burt Reynolds or Sally Fields. However, at 7:30pm, you could find it all on the big screen when the movie wizard projectionist Ken Rogers let the original movie roll.
Theatre owner Raissa Rogers teamed up with Smokey and the Bandit enthusiasts Rob Johnston and Verdun Zurbrigg to promote the 40th anniversary of the movie and the tribute run to be held on Aug. 5 as part of the 150th Community Anniversary and 2017 Clifford Homecoming.
Drivers should arrive early in the W.C. Smith Wholesale parking lot located at the corner of Hwy. 10/109 for the 2nd Generation Trans Am 22km run. The run will be leaving at 9:30pm sharp. All colour of Trans Ams are welcome to join the run that will become one of the attractions of the Homecoming parade.
Next year organizers are hoping to entice more Trans Am drivers and spectators to the showing of Smokey and the Bandit sequel.
