Fundraising is underway for the new skatepark at Rockmosa Park in Rockwood.
Fundraising coordinator William Murray made a presentation to Guelph-Eramosa council at the March 21 meeting outlining efforts to date.
“I approached [parks and recreation director Robin Milne] about a year ago, maybe a year and a half ago, just to voice my interest in getting a skate park in our community,” Murray told council.
“So it’s something I’ve been interested (in) and then over the course of the last six months or so just been trying to mobilize some interested members of the community supporting the park.”
The group is hoping to put on a family fun day on June 25, potentially at the site of the new skatepark.
“We really wanted to set up a more organized family fun day where we could get a temporary skate park going with some food trucks and just make it an actual event where we can maybe have some people using the facilitates maybe even where the location might be planned,” Murray said.
Local teens are working to produce videos to promote the skatepark and engage the younger audience.
“That’s fantastic work and it’s great to have the children involved,” said Mayor Chris White after the presentation. “The objective here is to engage the youth and give them something to do in the community.”
White said council would be happy to offer support.
“I would say on behalf of council, I’d like to thank you for just stepping up as a citizen kind of on your own initiative,” White said. “Kind of popped out of the woodwork, which is nice and for folks to come along here that’s great.”
