SIU investigating ‘serious injury’ after chase involving Halton police

Spokesperson says four people taken to hospital – including one tasered by police

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – The province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is investigating after four people were injured, including one who was tasered by a Halton police officer, following a chase that ended in Guelph/Eramosa on Tuesday.

Halton Regional Police spokesperson Jeff Dillon told the Advertiser Halton officers responded to “a stolen vehicle investigation in the area of Guelph Line in Halton Hills” the afternoon of Nov. 12.

A resident on Guelph Line described the incident as a “high-speed chase” involving “seven cop cars following (a) speeding cube van,” just before 2pm.

Another witness said the chase “seemed to involve a U-Haul moving truck.”

Dillon stated on Nov. 14 that “four people are in custody and have been charged,” but offered no details, as the SIU is investigating.

In a Nov. 15 response to Advertiser inquiries, SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette stated the unit is “investigating the reported serious injury of a man following his arrest by Halton [police officers] on Tuesday.”

Denette explained the “pursuit” of “a stolen truck” started at about 1:20pm.

“Using a spike belt, officers stopped the truck at Highway 7 and Wellington Road 29 in [Guelph/Eramosa] and three occupants fled. All three were arrested,” Denette stated.

“A fourth person, a man, was located in the rear of the truck. A conducted energy weapon was discharged and he was arrested.”

She noted all four individuals were taken to a hospital.

“The man who was in the rear of truck is reported to have suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries,” and has since been released from the hospital,” Denette stated.

Asked about the incident on Nov. 13, Wellington County OPP spokesperson Constable Matthew Burton told the AdvertiserThere was a report of a motor vehicle collision in the area along Highway 7 near Jones Baseline.”

However, neither Halton police nor the SIU mentioned anything about a collision.

The SIU has assigned three investigators to the case.
