Sights and sounds of South America in the spring at groups meeting

President Bill Cheeseman welcomed 28 members and guests to the Clifford and District Horticultural meeting held recently at the Community Hall in Clifford.

Wayne Pfeffer of Ayton shared slides of his recent trip to South America focusing on the people, pleasures, flora, fauna, and the beauty, splendor, and roar of 235 falls from Peru to Brazil.

He was immersed in the culture for seven weeks. He sampled most of the cuisine, danced the tango, went horse back riding, ventured into the ocean, rode a jungle train, was drenched under the falls, and was dazzled by the entertainment.

Cannonball trees, native palms, bamboo and oaks were plentiful. The vegetation was lush and the colours of the flowers were vibrant. He said he could have stayed all day exploring the Botanical Gardens starting with the Japanese garden filled with lotus plants, peace lilies, and bird of paradise. He bid a fond farewell to Copa Cabano, joined the festival, and searched the shops for amethyst.

He presented a photo journal of his trip and was appreciative of Paul Judge who helped with the slide show.

Georgie Hutchison handed out membership packages to volunteers who will soon be seen about the streets and rural routes canvassing Clifford and area. Those volunteers will visit to sell society memberships. That helps the volunteers keep Clifford looking beautiful.

Cheeseman cited the coming District 7 annual general meeting in Harriston on April 21; the Earth Day clean up on April 28; the plant sale May 8; the spring flower show on May 22; an overnight bus trip to Lakefield June 19; a design workshop in Orangeville on April 28; and the Shelburne society’s 50th anniversary on May 12.

Door prize draw winners included Helen Braun, Georgie Hutchison, Rita Measures, Blanche Freeman, Ethel Whitehead, Yvonne Judge, Bruce Hutchison and Ruth Wolfe.

A lunch prepared by Isabel Senek and Elsie Grummett was enjoyed to finish the meeting.
