Shredding event on Oct. 31

Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington and FileBank are joining forces to combat identity theft by hosting a community shredding event.

Community members are invited to attend this event in the parking lot of the Mount Forest fire station at 381 Main Street North on Oct. 31 from 10am to 1pm.

Those interested can bring their unwanted personal documents for shredding by a FileBank mobile truck. A donation of $5 per banker’s box is required, with proceeds going to the Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington program.

Officials say identity theft is “the fastest growing form of consumer fraud in North America” and “community members can protect themselves by regularly destroying confidential and personal documents rather than disposing of them in non-secure places such as garbage bins.”

Incorporated in 1988, Crime Stoppers is a non-profit charitable program which combines the best efforts of the media, the community and the police in the fight against crime. Its goal is to promote awareness within the community and continue to educate students and the public in making the community safer. Since inception, $37,221,012 in recovered stolen property and illicit drugs are off the streets, 2,216 cases have been cleared, and 4,090 charges laid.
