Sharpe Farm Supplies Ltd. is expanding in Guelph-Eramosa Township.
On Dec. 18 Sharpe Farm Supplies asked Guelph-Eramosa council for site plan approval for a new 42,900 square foot warehouse to be built at 7707 Mill Road.
“The warehouse is intended to hold products and machinery related to the farm supply industry, their business that’s located on the property,” said township planning consultant Rachel Martin. “And a site plan application is required in order to facilitate the development of this warehouse on the property.”
The warehouse will be located southeast of the existing buildings and will contain six bays that will face the interior of the property, with a new entry way off of Watson Road. There will also be 22 off-street parking spaces constructed.
The lands on which the warehouse is proposed are designated prime agriculture under the Wellington County Official Plan and agricultural in the township zoning bylaw. Both permit farm-related buildings.
Councillor Corey Woods thanked Sharpe Farm Supplies for building within the township.
“I know they own a number of sites around, not necessarily here, all over,” he said.
“I do appreciate them wanting to stay in our township.”
Woods also explained that part of Mill Road has been redone and that the other needs to be done when funds become available.
“The plan is to continue to give Sharpe Farm an exemption to the weight restriction on the old section of Mill Road and when it’s time for that section to be done we can … spend the extra money, and bring it up to a county standard that would be suitable for heavy truck traffic,” he said.
Mayor Chris White also thanked Sharpe Farm Supplies.
“This is a very competitive process. These guys could have gone on a lot of different sites,” he said. “It’s one of the things we talk about, the residential (development) is drying up and we really need to look at commercial, industrial and agricultural.
“It’s kind of where we want to go so this is perfect for us so we’ll do whatever we can to assist moving forward.”
Council approved the site plan application.
