A recent donation marked another measure of support for Centre Wellington District High School’s “Wake Up Wellington” breakfast program.
Representatives and sponsors of Sensational Elora were at Centre Wellington District High School to present a cheque in support of the program, which works to reduce student malnutrition by offering a free breakfast.
Chef Chris Jess commented that “eating well before attending class is integral to proper retention and comprehension. Close to 500 students participate in the program each day and it is our belief that dealing with these food security issues at the school level helps to counter future food security issues in our community.”
Centre Wellington councillor and member of Sensational Elora Kirk McElwain said he was “pleased to be able to present this cheque.”
McElwain added he really appreciated the work done with Centre Wellington District High School’s breakfast program and he hopes to be able to be able to bring a larger cheque after this year’s Sensational Soup Off. That event is slated for this weekend at the Wellington County Museum.
Jess added the breakfast program assists students through the culinary program which helps to address food security issues for students.
“We do that through a series of breakfasts, where, through the generous funding of the community, we put out food for students that they do not have to pay for,” said Jess.
While some kids are getting some food before the day starts, “many of them are not.”
The program currently receives support from the Food and Friends program as well as initiatives such as the Live Free Campaign. It also accepts support through both individual and corporate donations. Contact Chef Nicole DeBeyer for information on how to participate at ndebeyer@ugdsb.on.ca.
