Section of Elora Cataract Trailway to close for tree maintenance

CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is closing a section of the Elora Cataract Trailway here next week for “hazard tree maintenance.”

The section of the trail affected – between the 3rd and 6th Lines, southeast of Belwood Lake – will be closed Feb. 3 to 5.

“Trail closure signs will be posted on the section between … and access will not be permitted,” states a Jan. 28 GRCA press release.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area [from 8am to 4:30pm] while the work is underway and to obey all posted signage so that crews may complete the work safely.”

The GRCA plans to remove about 300 dead or dying ash trees that are small in diameter and “pose a risk to the public.

“Where possible, trees that are removed as part of this maintenance work will be chipped or left on the forest floor where they will form new habitat and enrich the soil in the area as they decay,” officials state.
