Scrap metal drive raises funds for Groves hospital

Scrap metal can make a big difference.

The local scrap metal drive in May and September at the New to You shop has been very successful.

The drive has raised over $6,200 to date and organizers are looking forward to another successful drive this May.

The campaign that started May 2015 is becoming more familiar and people are starting to plan for the drop off.

Proceeds go towards the Groves hospital new build fund and organizers are excited by the enthusiasm shown by the community.

Bob Van Leeuwen of FAR Inc., a company for Eco metal recovery, Bob’s Bin service, and Fergus Auto Recyclers, takes donations year-round during regular office hours for Groves.

Each May and September they donate bins for the scrap metal drive to the New to You Shop.

Organizers appreciate the ongoing support of the community.

Groves foundation board member Cheryl Rowe asks residents to “please think of the scrap metal drive and donate – metal matters.”

She adds, “May is typically a cleaning out of the garage season – a perfect time to get rid of the scrap metal hanging around.”

Rowe noted that overall the hospital’s new build fund “has surpassed $16-million, which is 80% of our goal.”

Rowe offered thanks for  all the generous donations from the community.

She added Van Leeuwen has been a most gracious and generous partner with the New to You Shop, which supplies space for the metal bins.

“Metal prices are high at this moment so this is a perfect time to donate towards the hospital build,” said Rowe.

“Consider old barbecue frames, outside furniture, pots and pans, cookie sheets and muffin tins, anything metal. Please no propane tanks, no aerosol cans, and no tires.”

Claire Palmer from the New to You Shop notes that customers are already asking “When are the bins coming?”

The campaign runs every May and September in designated bins in the New to You parking lot.
