Scottish Festival offering first local kilt skate

FERGUS – The first local Kilt Skate will be held on Feb. 16, from 4:30 to 5:30pm at the Fergus sportsplex.

The arena will be open for a free public skate along with free hot chocolate, shortbread, entertainment by the Fergus Pipe Band, and a draw for tickets to the Fergus Highland Games this summer.

Kilt skates began in the 1980s on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa as a way to celebrate Sir John A. MacDonald’s birthday and have since become a tradition in cities and towns across the country.

This is the first one to be held in Fergus.

Participants are encouraged to embrace and celebrate the Scottish influence in this region.

The event is organized by the Fergus Highland Games as it prepares for the 75th edition of the games, Aug. 7 to 9.
