SafeKids Day held May 31

The Minto fire department, in partnership with the Minto Safe Communities Committee hosted a SafeKids Day at the Harriston Arena on May 31. Between 350 and 400 students from Palmerston Public, Minto Clifford Public School and parochial schools in Minto attended the event.

Students moved through nine stations, picking up safety information from local agencies including: Minto Fire, Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, Minto Lifeguards, Wellington County OPP, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Pulic Safety,  Wellington Home & Farm Safety Association and County of Wellington Emergency Measures.

The Minto Safe Communities Committee conducted a bike rodeo.

At the final station, students left comments about what they had learned.

“I learned that you can get struck by lightning even if it is not yet raining in your area,” said  Emma Vanderkolk.

Jaylan Leblond learned “not to hide under my bed or in my closet in the event of fire,” while Andrew Martin learned, “to always wear a helmet when riding a bike.”
