Wellington County OPP marine unit officers were out on the water again June 17 to 19.
Police say the officers conducted patrols to assist recreational enthusiasts by offering educational tips, checking for safety equipment and alcohol infractions.
They checked 70 vessels in total and issued three offence notices for failure to have proper personal floatation devices (PFD) onboard. Six warnings were also given out for various offences, including Liquor Licence Act violations.
Officers also investigated a marine collision involving two personal watercraft.
Police are reminding boaters to:
– stay alert;
– always wear a PFD;
– ensure the PFD fits snug and securely;
– use common sense and operate every vessel responsibly;
– operate watercraft at a safe speed at all times, especially in crowded areas;
– be courteous of others using the water and obey all boating rules;
– be cautious of swimmers and other marine operators; and
– avoid alcohol while operating a watercraft.
Police say anyone who suspects that someone is operating a boat while impaired should call 911 immediately.
