Riverside Glen to host hockey tournament

The Village of Riverside Glen Retirement and Long-Term Care in Guelph has brought the joys of winter to the residents, team members, volunteers and families by building a backyard ice rink.

A challenge to compete in a friendly game of hockey has been sent from The Village of Riverside Glen to the team and residents at The Village of Arbour Trails, the second Schlegel location in Guelph.

On Feb. 10, the two teams will meet at the Village of Riverside Glen’s ice rink for face-off.

“I’m looking forward to reliving some of my Olympic experience by dropping the puck at hockey game at Riverside Glen on Feb. 10 between Arbour Trails and Riverside Glen – should be a lot of fun,” said Brad Schlegel, VP of design and construction for RBJ Schlegel, former NHL player and Olympian.

The team at Riverside Glen have modified wheelchairs with skis to allow more residents the opportunity to participate on the ice.

“Residents from across our village are lining up with excitement to use our backyard ice rink,” said Bryce McBain, Riverside Glen general manager.

“Team members are happy to assist our residents to make this possible. The joy coming from our residents and team members seeing, hearing, being a part of these experiences on ice and re-telling their stories of fun on ice is evidence of a thriving culture change at our village. We’re very proud of our team.”

The game will take place on Feb. 10 at 2pm at The Village of Riverside Glen at  60 Woodlawn Road East, Guelph.
