EDEN MILLS - This weekend, Eden Mills Going Carbon Neutral is hosting a free public workshop at the Eden Mills community hall.
From 1 to 3pm, green engineer Richard Lay will talk about Renovating the old Barden Street Stable. Once owned by the Marshall family, the building is now being fixed by Lay.
He is taking every step to minimize emissions, and wants the house to be a working model. Lay will describe the project at the hall before taking interested people through the house itself where they will see each carbon neutral choice he has made, and learn why he made these choices.
At the hall, participants will see some video of the process. The renovation includes an air-to-air heat pump, in-floor radiant heating, a composting toilet, sprayed foam insulation and much more.
Lay has played a major role in the Eden Mills Going Carbon Neutral project.
He has brought his engineering expertise and long hours of work to the community hall energy audit, the technical revisions of the handbook Empowering Your Home, a full prioritizing and costing of potential energy-efficient renovations to the hall, and ongoing advice on workshop content.
Many villagers will have asked his advice over the years as they make house maintenance decisions.
Meanwhile, Lay has worked quietly and steadily to make an education out of the changes he is incorporating into the Old Stable. He and his wife, Lee Wisener’s own house, next door, has also been developed with sustainability in mind.
Most obviously, are the solar collectors on the roof, supplying hot water to his home for many years now, long before any talk of going carbon neutral. Now that the Go Green Grant project has ended, organizers state a twoonie donation for the hall is appreciated.
Next weekend, it is Earth Day in Eden Mills starting at 9am with a morning tree planting, a barbecue lunch, and afternoon workshops.,
