Over the next several weeks, Canadian Blood Services is anticipating hospitals will need more blood for patients than they currently expect to collect.
Adding a long weekend to the mix only intensifies the problem.
Canadian Blood Services wants to avoid the low inventory situation of last summer so is encouraging new and regular donors to donate blood.
“The growth in hospital need and the long weekend means we need all eligible donors to step forward” said Marg Gow, community development coordinator.
Canadian Blood Services needs to maintain blood and platelet supplies for critically ill patients such as trauma or cancer patients and patients who require blood transfusions on a regular basis. With a shelf life of only five days, having enough platelets during a long weekend period is always a challenge.
First time donors are reminded they must have identification to donate and to drink lots of fluid and eat well before donating. Since each donation can save three lives, one hour of time this summer can make a direct and positive impact on someone’s life.
The blood donor clinic is at the Mount Forest and District Recreation Complex on Aug. 4 from 2 to 8pm (no appointment necessary).
