Councillors here are ready to support a business mentoring workshop for local students.
Cheryl Fayle, of the Career Education Council, wrote to the township recently seeking support of its Way to Work mentoring workshop.
The request asked for the municipal rental fees to host a half-day student and business workshop on May 13 from 8 am to 12:30pm at the Mount Forest Sportsplex.
Fayle wrote, “The Career Education Council Guelph Wellington Dufferin is … for approximately 85 senior students from Wellington Heights and Norwell high schools. We have invited Centre Wellington in Fergus but have not heard if they want to bring a bus of students. Approximately 28 local business mentors will work with the students.”
She added students work with several mentors, critiquing resumes, conducting mock interviews, and sharing insights about how to get and keep a job that is right from for each student.
Last year the workshop was at the Palmerston community centre and the year before at the Mount Forest community centre.
Fayle said the Career Education Council is a not-for-profit business and education partnership whose mandate is to bring business and students together to help young people learn about careers and the world of work.
It gets some operating funds from schools and the Ministry of Education but relies heavily on donations from business to deliver our programs and services.
In addition to asking for the fee to be waived, Fayle invited staff and council to be mentors. In the past, Wellington North has offered the facility to the group free of charge.
Council saw no issues providing the group support.
