MAPLETON – Township staff say efforts to fill a vacant council seat here are progressing well.
“Sufficient interest has been generated by local news coverate from the Wellington Advertiser … plus Guelph Today,” states an Oct. 22 departmental report from township clerk Larry Wheeler.
During a regular meeting of council on the same day, Wheeler said staff has received a “reassuring level of interest” in the position.
The seat has been vacant since Sept. 30, when former-councillor Martin Tamlyn started a new role as climate change coordinator, a position shared between the townships of Mapleton and Centre Wellington.
“Council’s preferred strategy of ‘Appointment and call for Applications’ is progressing as planned at this juncture,” the report states.
Council vacancy notices outlining the application process were posted in the Advertiser, Community News, and on the township’s website and social media on Oct. 16 and 23.
Applications were due by 5pm on Oct. 28.
Next, candidates will submit two-page personal statements of qualification by Nov. 4.
They will then each present for five minutes during a regular meeting of council on Nov. 12.
Following these presentations, councillors will vote for the candidate they deem most fit for the job.
