FERGUS – McKesson Canada recently announced that Rachel Luther from Centre Wellington Remedy’sRX has been named Pharmacist of the Year.
McKesson Canada’s retail group gathered for its annual conference on May 23 to recognize the excellence of independent pharmacist owners under the Guardian, IDA and Remedy’sRx banners.
The Pharmacist of the Year Award recognizes a pharmacist who demonstrates leadership and exemplifies the evolution of the pharmacy profession toward an expanded role in health care.
“I was very shocked and surprised,” said Luther.
“I am very flattered that they recognized me for it, and I guess I really felt seen when I got recognized because I just put my head down and do my work, and do my job to the best of my ability.”
Officials say the award winner brings respect to the profession “by advancing the recognition of the pharmacist’s role in optimizing drug therapy outcomes for Canadians.”
Officials added that while providing essential services like weekly refill reminder calls, home visits for MedsChecks, compression stocking fittings, and a convenient drive-thru pick-up window, Centre Wellington Remedy’sRx goes beyond the traditional scope of a pharmacy.
Luther told the Advertiser her retail business associate recommended she get nominated for the Community Care Award.
After submitting the form stating how the pharmacy runs differently, it was then thought she should be nominated for pharmacist of the year.
In 2022, the Fergus pharmacy expanded its facilities to include a virtual medical clinic, counselling space, and a full-service yoga studio.
The counselling space is utilized by three counsellors for client sessions, and Luther provides specialized programs, including migraine and insomnia programs, minor ailments prescribing, and a monthly free hearing clinic.
The yoga studio offers restorative classes and serves as a venue for educational sessions on topics like heart health and diabetes education.
Luther is also active in the community as a board member of the Centre Wellington Community Foundation and Curl for a Cause.
She is a member of CW 100 Women Who Care and sponsors various local organizations, including sports teams, the Fergus Lions Club, and the Community Resource Centre.
Recently, Luther made a $15,000 donation for outdoor fitness equipment at a local park.
“It’s nice to be seen by your peers because they know what needs to go into the work that you do to be considered,” said Luther.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do all my other programs without the help of my staff.
“It’s really an award for the whole team.”
