Queen of the Furrow contestants sought

The Wellington County Plowing Match is fast approaching and organizers are seeking enthusiastic young women to enter the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow competition.

This year the Plowing Match will be held on Aug. 21 at Webholme Farms, home of Doug and Sharon Weber.  The farm is located at 7673 8th Line in Mapleton Township.

The Queen of the Furrow represents the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association by attending various agricultural functions and community events throughout the year, as well as representing Wellington County at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow competition held in conjunction with the International Plowing Match in 2009.

The competition is open to young women between the ages of 16 and 25. The competitors will be judged on plowing, an interview, and a prepared speech -two to three minutes on any topic relating to agriculture.

The speech and interview will be held on Oct. 17 at the Plowmen’s banquet. The plowing portion of the competition will be held at 1:30pm at the County Plowing Match on Aug. 21.

The plowing element of the competition is symbolic of the match but is not essential for success, so those interested should not be concerned if they have never driven a tractor.  A coach is there to assist and contestants tend to find it to be lots of fun.

For more information or to enter the competition, contact Beth-Ann Weppler at 327-8921 or Mary-Lou Fletcher at 638-3838 before August 19.
