It was perfect ball weather on July 26 as Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield announced $75,000 in federal funding to improve the Aberfoyle ball diamond.
The funding will help with the installation of new lighting and bleachers at the Brock Road diamond.
The township will cover the remaining portion of the total project cost, estimated at about $250,000.
Longfield said the Aberfoyle funding is part of a national commitment of over $300 million to support Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) projects, including 350 approved projects in southern Ontario.
“The program aims to leave a lasting legacy as part of the celebrations of Canada’s 150th anniversary,” he added.
Longfield noted the program, which is being delivered by regional development agencies across the country, will allow Canadians and their families to enjoy Sports, recreation, leisure and healthy communities for years to come.
“Whether gathering at a community centre or a friendly competition, we have long understood the value of being outside, playing and spending time together,” Longfield said.
Over 730 projects have been approved under both intakes of the CIP 150 program, which Longfield said supports the renovation, expansion and improvement of existing community and cultural infrastructure.
Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong was pleased to take part in the celebration of the new lights at the ballpark.
“We appreciate the funding from the federal government for this,” said Chong.
“It’s been a great year, and it is wonderful to see all the flags for the Canada 150 pop up throughout the country.”
Chong added, “Canada is quite a bit older than 150 years,” noting some Canadian institutions date back 400 years, when New France was established.
Chong said Canada is the third oldest continuous democracy and system of government in the world – after the United Kingdom and the United States.
“It has endured a very long time and is something we can all be proud of,” he said.
Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever was very appreciative of the funding.
“This will enhance the future use and enjoyment of the Puslinch Community Centre grounds,” Lever said of the ball diamond improvements.
Safety upgrade
“It is an important safety upgrade for the township, and will extend the use of this facility well into the future.”
Lever also spoke of the township’s recreation master plan and how well the Aberfoyle facility is used.
He described the Aberfoyle Community Centre grounds as “our core recreation area.”
