Puslinch council is considering a request to change the name of Swastika Trail to Travelled Road.
The issue is not about the name “Swastika,” but rather the consistency of the road name.
In July, Puslinch councillors reviewed Joani Horvath’s request to change the road name.
Horvath, a Puslinch Lake area resident living along Swastika Trail, made the request as the roadway current has three names.
“It starts as Travelled Road (off of County Road 32), then makes the turn west and becomes Swastika Trail, and then it becomes Cedar Trail,” Horvath wrote.
“There is justifiable reason to name this one street – with one name.
“For emergency services and deliveries to this area, it is critical that it has one name.”
Councillor Matthew Bulmer said he was pleased to see Horvath’s letter, as the issue has cropped up previously at council.
Bulmer thought it was an interesting suggestion and that Horvath offered some good points.
Councillor John Sepulis asked about the process.
CAO Karen Landry said that there is a process under the Municipal Act to change the name of private roads.
Landry added she would also get feedback from emergency services and the county about the renaming.
She explained the township would also investigate whether there is a consensus of opinion of those living along the road, because there are costs that would be incurred – such as changing postal address identification.
Landry said her report would summarize that information.
Councillor Susan Fielding asked if this is one of the parts of the township that recently had postal address changes.
Fielding referred to recent efforts to identify residential addresses as Puslinch – not as rural routes of Guelph or Cambridge.
She suggested it would be best if any changes are co-ordinated to avoid two address changes.
Council received the correspondence and referred it to staff for a report.
