In the true spirit of the season, a group of concerned Puslinch citizens has stepped forward to support Syrian refugees coming to Guelph.
With 50 families coming to the Guelph area, “We wanted to support the refugees and help them re-establish themselves in Canada,” said Bill Knetsch, who is heading up the project.
Working quickly to make it happen, arrangements have been made with local churches, Aberfoyle Public School, the township office and the library, for large bins to be on display so people can drop off gently-used clothing, household items, etc.
Knetsch said the bins will be emptied on a regular basis and delivered to a warehouse in Guelph where donations are being stored.
“With larger items, arrangements will have to be made with The Salvation Army by calling 519-836-9824.
Cold Point Holdings (next door to Danby by Wellington Road 124) at 5068 Whitelaw Road Guelph has also kindly made its storage facility available. However, those interested do need to call ahead to arrange access (phone Muhammed at 519-841-0686).
A list of the types of items that can be donated can be found on the group’s website www.puslinch.org as well as on postcards that will be distributed around the township.
“We are looking for volunteer drivers to help transport the donations to Guelph,” Knetsch said. “Those interested in getting involved in this way, should connect support@puslinch.org.”
Knetsch noted Puslinch is known for its sense of community and the committee is relying on local residents to get behind this project to support new arrivals to Guelph.
