Provincial government announces school upgrades

Students in Perth-Wellington are benefiting from urgently needed repairs and renovations to improve publicly funded schools, said Perth-Wellington MPP John Wilkinson.

Local schools are benefitting from new windows, boilers and roofs, as well as upgrades to facilities such as science labs and auditoriums.

“Improving our rural schools helps create safer and more engaging places for our young people to learn and grow,” Wilkinson said Jan. 16.

“Every single project helps to strengthen our rural communities and support the future of rural education.”

Under the fourth year of the government’s Good Places to Learn program, the two school boards serving the Wellington portion of the riding, students will receive new funding to help them continue to improve school buildings and ensure that all students have safe and supportive learning environments:

The Upper Grand District School Board will receive $3,674,824 and the Wellington Catholic District School Board will get $518,033.

Since 2005, the initiative has been improving the condition of schools across the province.  Under the first three stages of the program:

– the Upper Grand District School Board received $27,613,077 to undertake four boiler projects, 15 window projects, 55 roof projects and 79 other school improvement projects; and

– the Wellington Catholic District  School Board received $3,476,870 to undertake six window projects, nine roof projects, seven boiler projects and 201 other school improvement projects

To date, almost 12,000 renewal projects are underway or completed in schools across the province. The total provincial investment in the Good Places To Learn initiative is $4.8 billion.

“By investing in better schools for our students, we’re helping them to succeed and reach their full potential,” said Education Minister Kathleen Wynne.
