ABOYNE – Nestled between orange and pink, “peach fuzz” is the colour of 2024 according to the 25th annual Pantone Colour of the Year.
Starting off the pink hued year is the Wellington County Museum and Archives with its Pretty in Pink exhibit.
Having its grand opening on Dec. 23, the Pretty in Pink exhibit will be open to the public until the month of May.
“You walk into the room and it’s like, overwhelmingly pink,” said museum curator Hailey Johnston.
“It’s not any kind of specific theme other than pink.”
The museum collects many items, even reaching into the modern era of the 21st century, according to Johnston.
The Pretty in Pink exhibit showcases several of these items that are full of different pink hues that have either never been on display in the museum or have not been on display in the last ten years.
This is not the first time the museum has done a colour-themed exhibit, but is the first time since 2016.
The exhibit not only showcases the bright Barbie colour, but Johnston said visitors may learn something about the colour’s history.
“Pink actually used to be for baby boys, not for baby girls,” she gave as an example.
“It was seen as a paler version of red, and red was seen as a much more masculine colour with overtones of fire, energy, violence. Whereas blue was considered more delicate and that was appropriate for little girls.”
“Now, we’ve kind of flipped our thinking, and that’s interesting,” said Johnston.
Generally speaking, the museum curator said the exhibit is more of a “show and tell” to reveal the things the museum has collected that are pink.
“You’re going to recognize a bunch of it,” she stated.
Photo opportunities with some of the items will also be available.
