WELLINGTON COUNTY – One of the Legion’s top priorities each fall is the Poppy Campaign, which begins in late October and runs through to Nov. 11, Remembrance Day.
The distribution of poppies is a tradition in Canada that began in 1921 which helps raise funds to support veterans and their families.
The iconic red poppy serves as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude.
Ontario Command President Derek Moore has been honoured with kicking off this year’s campaign.
“I received notice yesterday that I’ll be pinning the first poppy on the lieutenant governor at Sunnybrook Hospital,” Moore said.
“I’m looking forward to that.”
Poppies for the campaign are not sold, they are available free, though donations are considered common practice.
