Ponsonby Sting participate in world championships

The Ponsonby Sting gave a solid showing at the 2014 International Softball Congress World Championships held in Kitchener Aug. 9 to 16.

The Sting, a men’s fastball team playing in the South Perth men’s fastball league are a group of local fastball players who have grown up playing in Fergus, Elora, Ponsonby, Belwood and Hillsburgh.

The current head coach is John Cunningham and assistant coach is Jim Kurtz.

This team has been playing fastball at Ponsonby for some time. Previously, they played in the Intercounty Fastball League where they won the league championships in 2012 and 2013. Their home games are Mondays at 8:30pm at Ponsonby Recreation Centre located on 2nd Line just west of County Rd 7.

The world championship games were played at Peter Hallman Ball Yards and Budd Park.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for a local team to be competing in this championship,” note team officials, who also thanked sponsors Lloyd Scott Enterprises, Ted Buczek and Stan Bowen for their contributions which allowed the team to obtain new jerseys.

The team had three wins and four losses at the worlds.

The results were:

Game 1 – ESA Ekland Thunderbellies from Pennsylvania 2, Sting 7;

Game 2 – Kitchener Hallman Twins 9, Sting 1;

Game 3 – Tavistock Merchants 3, Sting 11;

Game 4 – Midland Emerson Aces, Michigan 8, Sting 0;

This second loss moved them to the ISC II bracket.

Game 5 – Tavistock Merchants 0, Sting 4;

Game 6 – Niagara Snappers 2, Sting 0 (9 innings);

Game 7 – Napanee Express 10, Sting 9.
