Those who have played ball at the Ponsonby Recreation Park know it is a “Field of Dreams.”
From year to year, players are surrounded by corn, beans or wheat.
Ponsonby Ball Park caters to young minor ball players of the area: Ponsonby Sting Men’s Fastball team, Ponsonby Ladies Fastball league and Ponsonby Men’s Three Pitch league.
It is also home to the annual Tom Rider Memorial Tournament as well as many other tournaments.
It is a booming park, filled with activity, officials say.
For 50 years, Ponsonby Recreation Park has been at its current location in the “Field of Dreams.” From the beginning, it has been operated and maintained by volunteers.
The present executive has embarked on a campaign to replace the lights, which have been in use for over 25 years. The price tag for this project is about $150,000. To continue as a viable venue, Ponsonby Ball Park needs support.
Officials have raised $50,000 thus far, largely due to individual donations made by people of the Ponsonby community. They say there are five or six hundred more individuals who will want to support this endeavor once the park’s need is known.
“With your assistance, our Field of Dreams will continue to light up the night,” officials stated.
