Wellington County OPP officials say the local detachment is “more strategic and intelligence-led in the delivery of policing services in our communities.”
Police say an analysis of five years of data shows motor vehicle collisions continue to be a concern on Highway 6 between Mount Forest and Arthur.
“One of the main contributing factors is motorists driving at speeds too fast for the road and weather conditions,” police stated in a press release.
From Jan. 18 to Feb. 1, officers focused patrols on this stretch of road in an effort to reduce the overall number of collisions.
During this two-week period, 50 officer-hours were devoted, resulting in 13 speeding offences, one for passing unsafely and 12 warnings issued. Officers investigated three vehicles in the ditch with no damage during poor weather and road conditions. No reportable motor vehicle collisions were investigated during the two-week period.
“Through the continued analysis of data we are better able to deploy our resources in the right places, at the right times, focusing on the right issues,” said Wellington County OPP Detachment Commander Scott Lawson.
“This will ensure a more effective delivery of service while allowing for the reinvestment of our efforts to other policing priorities throughout the county. We are now predicting those calls-for-service, quarter by quarter, that require our attention.
“We always have to mobilize and engage our community to assist us in addressing these issues of mutual concern because we can’t do it alone.”
Police are reminding motorists to drive according to road and weather conditions, which can change suddenly. Many collisions can be prevented if drivers just slow down, police say.
