Police encourage safe driving after fatalities

OPP officials are urging residents to drive safe after two Fergus men died within two days in separate accidents on local roads last week.

On March 27 cyclist Richard Lane, 48, died after being hit by a vehicle on Wellington Road 7 in Guelph-Eramosa.

The next day, Darren Suszczynski, 42, died when his motorcycle collided with a car on Wellington Road 7 in Centre Wellington.

“The past two days we have lost two members of our community in devastating crashes,” OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Scott Lawson stated in a March 29 press release.

“Families are left to pick up the pieces and everyone involved in the incident suffers. Officers will continue to patrol our roadways in an effort to make them safer, but we need everyone to accept responsibility for their actions on the road.”

While the investigation into both collisions is continuing, OPP officials are reminding everyone to drive safely, especially since more  cyclists and motorcycles will be back on the road.

Police are asking drivers to “slow down and share the roadways,” noting “excessive speed and aggressive driving behaviors continue to threaten the safety of all other road users.”

“We don’t want more families to suffer the pain of losing a loved one on the road,” Lawson said.
