Wellington County OPP is warning job seekers of a “mystery shopper” ad scam.
Police say that earlier this month a Wellington North resident answered an on-line advertisement to be a “mystery shopper” and received a cheque for $2,800 with information on shopping tasks to complete.
The victim deposited the cheque in their bank account, and then used some of the money to buy products as a “mystery shopper.”
The victim was told to deposit cash into an account at a different bank.
A few days after completing the tasks, the victim found out the cheque was counterfeit and they were accountable for the money sent and withdrawn.
“Remember if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is,” police warn.
