Police beat: Teen charged with dangerous, impaired driving in June crash

WELLINGTON NORTH –  A Mount Forest teen has been charged with dangerous and impaired driving in a crash last month that sent a passenger to hospital with what police are calling “life-threatening” injuries.

Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews responded to the scene of single-vehicle collision on Sideroad 10 East in Wellington North on June 9 at about 1:30am.

“Initial reports indicated that a grey hatch-back had left the roadway and the two occupants were injured,” police stated in a July 18 press release.

“A 19-year-old passenger was taken to a trauma centre with life-altering injuries.”

Cayden Paul Weber, 19, of Mount Forest, was charged with driving with more than 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, driving without insurance, using unauthorized plates and being a G1 licence holder not accompanied by a qualified driver.

He was to appear in Guelph court on July 12.

It’s not clear why it took police more than five weeks to report this incident to the media.

Drugs, assault, flight from police

FERGUS – A Fergus woman faces numerous charges – including assault, possession of drugs and stolen property, and impaired and dangerous driving – in connection with an incident here in May.

Wellington County OPP officials say police were conducting a RIDE program on Orangeville Road in Fergus on May 14 at about 8:30pm.

“The driver of a stolen white sedan refused to stop at the check and struck an officer, causing minor injuries,” police stated in a July 18 press release.

Maisie Elizabeth Rooyakkers, 31, of Fergus, was charged with:

  • assaulting a peace officer with a weapon;
  • impaired dirving;
  • dangerous driving;
  • flight from police;
  • possession of property obtained by crime (over $5,000);
  • performing a driving stunt;
  • driving while suspended; and
  • possession of Schedule I substance (cocaine). 

She was held for bail. 

Shots fired by an impaired motorcyclist? 

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – On June 24 at about 5pm, Wellington County OPP responded to a nose complaint on Speedvale Avenue East, just outside Guelph.

“It was reported that gun shots were heard, and the suspect was possibly operating a motorcycle,” states a July 18 press release from police.

Mark Gregory Webster, 43, of Guelph/Eramosa, was charged with discharging a firearm in a reckless manner, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless storage of firearm, and driving with more than 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system. 

He was held for bail.

Careless driving charge

MINTO – One person was injured after a vehicle struck a tree here this spring, resulting in charges for an Innisfil man.

On April 26 at about 1:15pm, emergency crews responded to a collision on Wellington Road 87 in Minto.

“It was reported that a vehicle had struck a tree and that there were three people injured,” states a July 18 press release from Wellington County OPP. 

“One person was transported to a trauma centre with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Theodore L. Van Kuik, 64, of Innisfil, was charged with careless driving cause bodily harm. He is to appear in Guelph court on Aug. 21.

Careless, impaired driving – with a weapon

CENTRE WELLINGTON – On April 26 at about 4:30pm, emergency crews responded to a collision on Wellington Road 29 here.

“It was reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and entered the ditch,” states a July 18 press release from Wellington County OPP. 

Darrell Daniel John Mayer, 44, of Waterdown, was charged with dangerous driving, unauthorized possession of a weapon, careless driving and being a novice driver with a blood-alcohol concentration above zero.

He was to appear in Guelph court on July 12.

It’s not clear why it took police close to three months to report this incident to the media.

Weapon, driving charges

ALMA – On May 4 at about 8:15pm, a Wellington County OPP officer monitoring traffic on Peel Street West here stopped the driver of a grey sedan.

Stewart Edward Noel Dumigan, 26, of Elmira, was charged with impaired driving,  possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, speeding and driving with cannabis readily available. 

He was to appear in Guelph court on June 4.

Thrice in three weeks

MOUNT FOREST – A local man may want to find a new hobby after he was charged twice in three days – and three times within three weeks – with “illegally” driving a dirt bike.

On June 7 at about 7pm, Wellington County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Egremont Street North in Mount Forest.

“It was reported that a dirt bike was being operated illegally,” police stated in a July 18 press release.

Stephen Daniel Wilson, 33, of Mount Forest, was charged with possession of Schedule I substance (methamphetamine). 

Two days later, on June 9 at about 4:30pm, police again responded to a complaint about a dirt bike “being operated illegally” on Egremont Street North in Mount Forest. 

Wilson was charged with two counts of driving while prohibited.

About three weeks after the second incident, on June 29 at about 2:30pm, Wellington County OPP responded once again to a report of a dirt bike “being operated illegally” on Egremont Street North in Mount Forest. 

Wilson was charged with two counts of driving while prohibited, failing to comply with an undertaking, two counts of two counts of driving while suspended and two counts of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine and opioid).

He was held for bail on the third incident and was to appear in Guelph court on July 3 and 12 for the previous two incidents.

Dangerous driving

GUELPH – On June 1 at about 3am, Wellington County OPP responded to a collision on the Hanlon Expressway.

Police say “a vehicle had collided with a pole and a passenger was taken to a trauma centre with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Yonas Tsegay, 28, of Guelph, was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and being a novice driver with a blood-alcohol concentration above zero. The accused was to appear in Guelph court on June 14.
