Over 9,000 charges
ORILLIA – The OPP laid over 9,000 traffic charges across the province during Canada Road Safety Week (May 17 to 23) – a total police say is high given they provided “advance notice” they would be “cracking down on aggressive, careless and other poor drivers.”
During what the OPP calls “the most robust traffic safety campaign of the year,” officers responded to 935 collisions (three fatal), the majority of which police say were preventable.
Charges laid during the seven-day campaign include:
– 8,020 for speeding;
– 632 for no seatbelt;
– 216 for impaired driving;
– 177 for distracted driving;
– 151 for careless driving; and
– 138 for stunt driving/racing;
“The results of this campaign reflect a firm commitment on the part of our officers and our valued policing partners to keeping our roads safe,” stated OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique. “I am proud of their ongoing dedication to saving lives and their zero tolerance of drivers whose poor driving behaviours jeopardize the safety of innocent road users.”
Prohibited driver arrested
GUELPH – A Fergus man prohibited from driving for more than a decade was arrested after being caught behind the wheel here.
On May 30 at about 4:20pm, Guelph Police officers observed a pickup truck in the area of Willow Road and Imperial Road North with a suspected of carrying a non-secure load.
The driver “acknowledged his licence was suspended,” police stated in a press release. “Investigation revealed it had been suspended in 2010 pending completion of remedial measures related to an impaired driving conviction.”
A 36-year-old Fergus man was charged with driving while prohibited. He is to appear in Guelph court on July 12. The truck was impounded for 45 days.
(Guelph Police generally do not provide the names of those charged).
