Safety campaign results
LONDON – West Region OPP officials say their officers laid over 750 charges during a recent “Drive smart – keep it safe” traffic safety campaign throughout southwestern Ontario.
During the campaign, which ran between Sept. 23 and 29, officers stopped 1,967 vehicles and charged 26 with stunt driving, police stated in an Oct. 2 press release.
“Officers also stopped and charged 86 drivers of modified vehicles, along with 597 operators for speed offences and 76 for Criminal Code traffic-related charges,” police added.
OPP Inspector Mike McConnell of the West Region Traffic Safety and Marine unit said the campaign “reinforced the fact that safe driving is not just a suggestion, but a responsibility we all share.
He added, “Let’s continue to put public safety first by saying no to speeding, stunt driving, and unsafe vehicle modifications.”
The OPP warns that drivers involved in stunt driving or street racing are subject to a long list of punishments, ranging from an immediate 30-day licence suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment to fines up to $10,000, jail terms up to six months and suspensions that can escalate to a lifetime driving ban upon repeat convictions.
