Police beat: Mapleton man faces assault, mischief charges

ROTHSAY – A Mapleton man is facing assault and mischief charges following an incident here last week.

Wellington County OPP officers responded to an assault call on Elora Street East in Rothsay on Dec. 17 at about 4:45pm.

“On police arrival, one victim was discovered to have minor injuries, but did not require medical attention,” police stated in a Dec. 18 press release.

“As a result of the investigation, the accused was located and taken into custody after a brief struggle with police, resulting in one officer being assaulted and suffering minor injuries, which also didn’t require medical attention at the scene.”

Neaca Keller, 37, of Mapleton Township, was charged with assault, assaulting a peace officer, two counts of mischief (damaging property) and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Hit-and-run charges

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – A local man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run collision here earlier this month.

Wellington County OPP officials say they responded to a collision on Wellington Road 39 in Guelph/Eramosa on Dec. 6 at about 4:45pm.

“The collision involved three motor vehicles, where two separate drivers were injured and taken to local hospital for treatment, and one vehicle had fled the scene prior to police arrival,” police stated in a Dec. 17 press release.

“OPP, alongside other emergency services attended the scene and began the investigation. 

“It was reported that one driver sustained minor injuries, while the other’s injuries were considered serious.”

However, police say both drivers’ injuries were not life threatening and they were treated at hospital.

Landon Fletcher, 19, of Guelph/Eramosa, was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm.

He is to appear in Guelph court on Jan. 14.

Driver didn’t stop

MAPLETON – On Dec. 11 at about 8:30am, Wellington County OPP officers performing traffic enforcement on Highway 6 noticed a “suspicious” vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

A 25-year-old driver from Kitchener was charged with speeding and failing to stop for an emergency vehicle.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Suspended driver found with illegal cigarettes

FERGUS –  On Dec. 8 at about 1:15pm, Wellington County OPP officers stopped a “suspicious” vehicle on Tower Street North.

A 57-year-old from Guelph was charged with possessing unmarked cigarettes and three counts of driving while suspended.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

More than $17,000 worth of phones, watches stolen

GUELPH – City police were called to a business at Stone Road Mall on Dec. 11 after the manager arrived to find a drawer pried open and phones and smart watches missing. 

“Surveillance video showed two males walking around the mall until after it had closed, then one entered the stand-alone business and removed the product. A crowbar was left behind,” police stated in a press release.

Police say the stolen devices are valued at about $17,810.

The first suspect was described as having brown skin and a heavy build with short black hair and facial hair. He was wearing a red puffy jacket, black shirt, black pants and black shoes. 

The second suspect also had brown skin, slim build with short black hair and facial hair. He was wearing a blue puffy jacket, black pants and red Nike shoes.
