HARRISTON – A local man is charged with careless driving after an elderly pedestrian was hit by a vehicle here this spring.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, on Elora Street South in Harriston, on April 8 at about 3pm.
Wellington County OPP officials say a white SUV “collided” with an 87-year-old pedestrian.
“The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” police stated in a July 4 press release.
Bruce Richard Lawrence, 65, of Harriston, was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm. He is to appear in Guelph court on Aug. 21.
It is not clear why it took police almost three months to report this incident to the media.
Man charged after fight following crash
MORRISTON – A Guelph man has been charged with assault in connection with an altercation with a fellow driver following a collision.
Wellington County OPP officials say police were called for a “disturbance” on Highway 6 in Morriston on April 9 at about 5pm.
“It was reported that there had been a minor collision and that the involved parties were fighting,” police stated in a July 4 press release.
Ryan James Campbell, 34, of Guelph, was charged with assault and dangerous driving. He was to appear in Guelph court on May 14.
Couple arrested for slew of driving offenses
GUELPH – A Puslinch man is facing 30 charges after two-month investigation by Guelph Police Service’s break and enter and auto theft unit.
Police officials say the investigation led to two arrests on July 2.
A 36-year-old woman from Guelph was charged with driving while suspended, possessing property obtained by crime (over $5,000) and two counts of possessing property obtained by crime (under $5,000).
A 38-year-old man from Puslinch was charged with driving while suspended, possessing property obtained by crime (over $5,000), failing to comply with an undertaking, two counts of possessing property obtained by crime (under $5,000) and 25 counts of driving while prohibited.
The man and woman were held for a bail hearing on July 3.
‘Busy start to summer’ during Canada Day campaign: OPP
ORILLIA – OPP officials say “it was a busy start to summer” as officers conducted their Canada Day Week campaign targeting poor behaviours on roads, waterways and trails across the province.
“Sadly, one person lost their life in a boating incident over the long weekend,” police stated in a July 3 press release.
During the campaign, which ran from June 21 to July 1 and “focused on seatbelt, lifejacket and helmet laws, the OPP laid 1,287 seatbelt-related charges, 96 charges for lifejacket and other marine safety equipment violations and 34 no-helmet charges,” police say.
Among the overall 17,889 traffic/marine charges laid during the campaign were:
– 173 for distracted driving;
– 224 for stunt driving;
– 447 for impaired driving; and
– 8,421 for speeding.
“The OPP thanks all drivers and passengers who kicked off the summer and celebrated the Canada Day long weekend with safety at top of mind and encourages them to continue to do so throughout the year,” police stated in the release.
“The OPP is committed to delivering on its Provincial Traffic Safety Strategy, which aims to reduce injuries and fatalities on more than 130,000 kilometres of roadways and close to 100,000 kilometres of waterways and trails throughout Ontario.”
Unlicensed driver faces numerous charges
GUELPH – On May 14 at 12:12pm, police observed an adult male driving a motorcycle near the intersection of Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue East in the City of Guelph.
The male was known to police and believed to be an unlicensed driver. Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop to confirm, however the male refused to stop and sped away. A pursuit was not initiated due to concerns for public safety.
Further investigation revealed that the male was a suspended driver, was never licensed to drive a motorcycle and the motorcycle had been stolen two weeks earlier.
On July 5, at 6:36pm, police located the male in the downtown core, and he was subsequently arrested.
A 32-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
-driving while under suspension;
-driving a motor vehicle with an improper licence;
-flight from police;
-possession of stolen property over $5,000; and
-occupy motor vehicle without consent.
He will appear in court on Aug. 13.
