Police beat: Guelph man arrested for attempted murder of neighbour

GUELPH A Guelph man faces attempted murder and other charges after his neighbour was attacked in his own home last week.

Guelph Police officials sat that just after 7am on April 2, police were called for a disturbance inside a home near Woodlawn Road East and Inverness Drive. 

“Investigation revealed a man had damaged a fence to gain access to the backyard, then removed a shovel from a shed and smashed a patio door to get into the house,” police stated in a press release.

“Once inside he used the shovel to repeatedly strike the homeowner in the face and head.

“Officers arrived while the assault was still occurring, intervening and placing the suspect under arrest.”

Police say the victim, a man in his 70s, sustained serious facial injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with aggravated assault, attempted murder, assault to resist arrest, break and enter, and mischief. He was held for a bail hearing last week. 

“Despite living on the same street the two men have never met or had any prior involvement with each other,” police stated.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include a 29-year-old from Mount Forest, who was charged with assault (spousal) and assault causing bodily harm (choke, suffocate or strangle) in relation to an incident in Mount Forest on March 31.

The accused individual is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Wrong-way driver

GUELPH – Police have charged a Kitchener resident after a vehicle was caught driving the wrong way on the Hanlon Expressway recently.

Wellington County OPP officials say an officer saw a vehicle travelling northbound in the southbound lanes on March 28 at about 8:30pm.

“The officer managed to stop the vehicle without incident,” police stated in a press release.

A 44-year-old Kitchener driver was charged with careless driving, failing to surrender a permit and failing to surrender an insurance card.

 The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

“This incident highlights the importance of remaining alert and abiding by traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users,” polcie stated.

Shoplifting charges

FERGUS – Police have charged two suspects in connection with a theft at a business here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say police here called to the business on St. David Street North on March 24 at about 1pm.

“It was reported that two individuals were attempting to shoplift approximately over $1,300 worth of items with no attempt to pay and proceeded to flee the area when police arrived,” police stated in a press release.

“Both individuals were located and arrested without incident.”

Police once again did not provide the name of the business involved.

A 32-year-old Guelph man and a 27-year-old Guelph woman were each charged with theft (under $5,000 ). The man was also charged with unlawfully being in a house.

They are to appear in court on April 29 and May 2.

Driving charges

DRAYTON – A Parkhill resident is facing 15 driving charges after he was stopped by police here recently.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were monitoring traffic on Main Street East in Drayton when they stopped a commercial vehicle.

A 37-year-old from Parkhill was charged with 15 driving offences related to improper paperwork and vehicle violations.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
