Playground to be removed from Victoria Park in Fergus

Township plans to install new play structure next spring

FERGUS – The playground equipment at Victoria Park here was to be removed on Thursday.

The decision was made by Centre Wellington staff after the playground had to be “closed suddenly” last month “due to structural damage to the slide,” states a June 13 press release from the township.

When municipal staff started looking into the cost of replacing the slide, they decided it makes more sense to replace the entire structure.

“Staff’s reasoning is based on the cost of the slide replacement, delivery time, and that the playground is at the end of its life, with a replacement schedule date of 2026,” states the township release.

Officials added, “Leaving the playground there – even closed with fencing surrounding it – poses concerns for public safety.”

The township planned to remove the playground equipment on June 15.

“Centre Wellington staff recognize the importance of parks for community members,” so the replacement of the playground “will be included in the 2024 budget,” states the release.

Township officials say the plan is to have the new equipment installed next spring.
