CENTRE WELLINGTON – Plans are underway for the new outdoor multi-use surface that will set the stage for year-round community activity in Bissell Park on Mill Street East in Elora.
This past spring, Mayor Kelly Linton, township council and the Community Services Advisory Committee selected this project as one of the successful applicants of the MacDonald Trust Fund.
The upgrade was approved in the 2019 budget for a cost of $475,000, including $350,000 from the MacDonald Trust and $125,000 from in-kind donations.
The upgraded facility in the heart of Elora will be accessible for unstructured play for youth and numerous community activities.
It will build on the legacy of the Jack R. MacDonald family’s generous donations to Elora for many years to come, officials say.
The project team is being led by the Elora Rockers Old-timer Hockey team, the Elora Lions, and the township. In the fall of 2019, significant work will begin at the site of the old Bissell Park rink.
Phase one includes the demolition of the old asphalt rink area and the construction of a new large concrete pad with coolant pipes.
Phase two involves the purchase and placement of outdoor portable hockey boards, related lighting and electrical services, as well as landscaping. Fundraising for this second phase is currently underway.
The project team is currently looking for sponsors and donors to complete the second phase.

“The partnership that has evolved between the Elora Rockers, the Elora Lions and the township is truly unique and incredible,” said Tom Keating, president of the Elora Rockers Old-timer Hockey team.
“The concept behind the project, the hard working individuals involved, and the way that everyone has come together to pull our ideas into fruition, is remarkable.
“The skate path concept surrounding the inner oval surface has generated a great deal of interest. This will allow many user groups, families and individuals use the space, at the same time, making the most out of this community hub.”
He continued, “Thank you also to the Centre Wellington Contractors Association who will be assisting us with this exciting project”.
