Just in time for spring cleaning, Planet CPU, located on Tower Street, is hosting its third annual Green IT Day.
From May 4 to 5, the business is hosting a free electronics recycling event to raise money for the Centre Wellington Food Bank.
“This is our third year,” explained Terry Godreau, co-owner of the store. “Last year we collected 20,000 pounds of electronics, which raised a total of $1,607 for our food bank.”
The two-day event allows the public to safely dispose of electronics into a large bin outside the store’s location.
“Anything that has a wire on it or takes a battery is good to go,” said co-owner Mark Reed, alluding to materials such as computer monitors, printers, radios and even microwave ovens. This includes electrical plugs, wires, old phone cords and similar items.
“Ninety percent of all electronic components are recyclable,” Godreau said, adding many of these gadgets and wires include precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum, which hold value in terms of fundraising with this event.
“These electronics also include mercury, chromium and barium, which can seep into our water and air supply.
“The goal is to keep more of these products from landfills and to create an opportunity for responsible disposal. We can do this free of charge while supporting a not-for-profit organization.”
Godreau and Reed are working with MIDA, which shares their philosophy on landfill diversion.
“We only deal with companies who have the highest environmental standards and all of our partners meet … regulatory compliance measures,” Godreau said.
Green IT Day has caught the attention and sponsorship support of Tripp-Lite, a company that makes power bars for electronics.
Godreau and Reed are also grateful for the support of local businesses, including the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce and the public, who are making use of social media to help get the word out.
“We’ve had huge support from our community,” Godreau said.
Neighbouring business White’s Service Centre is sharing the parking space between the two companies to ensure the giant bin is accessible.
“There will be people here to help anyone who needs equipment deposited to the bin,” Godreau assured. “Our team will be here to help.”
In return, the staff at Planet CPU are asking people to bring non-perishable food donations for a separate collection box, that will go to the food bank.
“It really helps the whole community; not just those in need but the community as a whole,” Godreau explained of the decision to fundraise for the food bank. “I see what they do with the money and how they appreciate it.”
Green IT Day runs May 4 from 9:30am until 7pm, and May 5 from 10:30am to 5:30pm. Drop off a donation and enter to win a $25 shop local gift certificate.
