Phase two of St. David Street reconstruction now underway

FERGUS – Work on the second phase of the reconstruction of St. David Street North (Highway 6) through Fergus begins April 14.

Phase two goes from 50 metres north of Garafraxa Street to Edinburgh Avenue, but this work will be done in two phases as well, to minimize disruption, township officials say.

“The project will initially focus on the section between Garafraxa Street and Bergin Avenue, to minimize disruption to businesses on the north side of the project limits,” states a township press release.

“The contractor will aim to complete as much work as possible in this area before moving on to the final section from Bergin Avenue to Edinburgh Avenue.”

Just like phase one, which occurred last year from St. Andrew Street to Garafraxa, phase two is also a complete reconstruction, including replacement of watermains and sanitary sewers, modifications to the storm sewer, full road and sidewalk replacement, and the addition of bike lanes.

Detours have been established.

Truck traffic is advised to use Wellington Road 7 to Wellington Road 17 to bypass Fergus altogether.

To avoid the area in -town, Gordon/Gartshore and Garafraxa will take you around the construction area.

The township has already installed “slow down” and “no trucks” signs, speed humps and bollards on local side streets in anticipation of increased detour traffic.

The work is expected to be substantially complete by December.

Updates on access, traffic calming and detour signage will be available atconnectcw.ca/stdavidstreet.
