ELORA – The second annual Pedal for Portage raised $66,780 in support of Portage Residential Treatment Centre.
“(The) community support was tremendous,” said Portage associate director Daniela Rodrigo, adding the final tally on Sept. 21 included a total of 83 cyclists (including eight kids) at the event at the Grand River Raceway.
Rodrigo anticipated more funds would arrive in the days following the event.
The event built upon the 2018 inaugural ride, which brought awareness to youth addiction and the importance of ensuring youth can access substance treatment immediately and for free.
Portage Ontario, a non-profit organization, operates a residential drug addiction rehabilitation centre for youth.
In the therapeutic community environment, residents work through underlying issues that caused substance abuse and develop a set of social competencies that help them deal with challenges of everyday life without resorting to drug abuse.
The Portage Elora treatment centre serves Ontario youth referred through a number of different avenues.
