No one was injured but a Harriston home sustained extensive damage in an early morning fire on Feb. 25.
Minto Fire responded to a reported structure fire on Elora Street South in Harriston at approximately 12:15am.
Wellington County OPP officials say the initial 911 call indicated the home was fully engulfed but the homeowner was accounted for.
Minto Fire Chief Chris Harrow said firefighters arrived to find flames on the main floor of the house coming from two windows.
“After a quick knockdown, crews made entry and continued suppression efforts,” stated Harrow.
Harrow said the bulk of the fire was contained to the main floor, but there was some extension to the attic area.
“Damage to the interior of the house was extensive,” the chief stated.
Harrow said a dog was rescued from the burning home by a couple passing by.
“A couple stopped after spotting the fire,” he explained.
“One of the individuals kicked in the back door and rescued the homeowner’s dog.”
No one else was home at the time of the fire, which police and fire officials said is not considered suspicious.
Damage is estimated to be in excess of $175,000, but Harrow said no injuries resulted from the fire.
“Minto Fire would like to thank the couple who stopped to call 911 and rescue the homeowner’s dog,” Harrow stated.
‘The couple that stopped and got the dog out deserve a lot of credit. A lot of people might not stop and do what they did.”
