Palmerston’s Lions Club members are seeking public comment about sharing profits from this year’s Minto Charity Golf Classic.
Club member Tim Meyers said the club will once again be holding its annual Minto Charity Golf Classic on June 25. Tee off time is 1pm at the Pike Lake Golf Course.
Meyers said in past years, the club always decided where to give the funds. The money has gone to some worthwhile causes; one year it was given to the local hospital for equipment purchases; another year the fire departments in Palmerston, Harriston, and Clifford shared the funds, Playground equipment for Harriston and Palmerston was bought another year, and a donation has been given to support special education classes at Norwell District High School in Palmerston, Harriston Senior and Minto Clifford Public Schools. Another year the funds were used to help a cancer patient from the Clifford area.
He said, “As you can see, all of the causes that the monies raised from this annual event have been all very worthwhile. This year the team of Lions that is organizing the seventh annual Minto Charity Golf Classic have decided to do things a little different. We thought why not ask the different organizations within our community to tell us where we should donate the proceeds of this event to.”
He said there is an application process and groups that participate in it should be groups or organizations that serve the community to make it a better place for residents.
An application form is available through the club’s website at www.palmerstonlions.com or at Home Hardware in Palmerston. Once completed, it can be returned either by email to dkwilson@wightman.ca or to return it to the Palmerston Home Hardware.
The deadline is Feb. 20, at 5pm. Applications after that will not be considered.
The classic committee will then meet and determine the beneficiaries.
A formal announcement is expected once that decision is reached.
In addition, the Palmerston Lions Club is challenging the residents, groups, organizations and businesses to participate in the event by entering a team of four golfers.
Mayor David Anderson said he has participated for the past three or four years.
Meyers said the intent is to make council aware of the event. He said the money could be split among different organizations.
Meyers noted just because the club calls itself the Palmerston Lions, “We’re basically the Minto Lions” and the idea is to share throughout the town. The group is also looking at ways to promote the event to raise as much money as possible. He asked they considered having two groups of four participate.
Because the event is June 25, he hopes to be able to piggyback the event with the Minto Redneck Games for promotion.
Mayor David Anderson said the group came up with some great ideas, especially the tie-in to the Redneck Games.
He noted that last year, one particular group with a trailer association came to the area for the entire weekend.
“I must warn you that tying it in with the Redneck weekend you might see some straw hats.”
Anderson added “It’s a great idea and tournament.”
